What Type should I choose?
The Type describes your business model and determines which Organic System Plans and forms you must fill out. Use the descriptions below to help choose your business type.
Producer: A person or business that grows food, fiber, feed, and other agricultural-based consumer products. Choose this type if you are a farmer selling raw (unprocessed) products. Some examples of products that are certified as "producer" products include: raw milk, raw vegetables, grains, live animals, and whole eggs.
Producer/Handler: A person or business who grows food, fiber, feed, and further processes that product beyond its raw state. Choose this type if you produce and process/package your own products. This does not include simple and common processing/handling operations that occur on all farms like cutting, drying, and enclosing items in a container. Cutting and baling forages, grinding and mixing feed, drying herbs, or putting vegetables into a CSA box is not considered "handling." Handlers substantially alter the raw product and generally require additional licensing. Examples of "Producer/Handler" products include: pasteurized milk, cheese, salsa, sauerkraut, flour, meat, broken eggs, apple cider, or multi-ingredient products. If you also process products for others, you will need to complete applications for two businesses, one as a Producer and another as a Handler. Please contact MOSA if you have questions about this distinction.
Handler: Handlers are either food processors, or those that buy, sell, handle, package and distribute agricultural products before it is sold at retail to consumers. This type includes wholesalers, distributors, retailers and restaurants. Choose this type if you do not produce (farm) the foods you process or handle. If you do produce the raw product and process it: choose Producer/Handler.
Transitional: For individuals or businesses working toward organic certification, transitional verification provides an assessment of your operation during the transition period. MOSA will evaluate your management plan to confirm that organic practices are being implemented and prohibited substances are avoided, supporting your progress toward full organic certification.
